Wednesday we began discussing the early church. One thing I find really interesting is that in the early writings, leadership was more spirit-directed rather than formal positions. I like that. We don’t begin to see a formalized structure until the end of the first century. While I definitely see the need for formalized structure in leadership especially as the church grows larger, Paul does tell us that in worship all things should be done “decently and in order” (1 Cor 14:40), I think it is a beautiful picture for members of the body to be able to share their giftings as the Spirit leads, whether or not in an “official” postition of leadership.
